An American Watch Co. vibrating hairspring stud with 20J in its gold 18K hunter achieved a new world's record of $14,400. Estimated at $800-1200. and listed as an 18s and 17J this "Hoke the Joke" reported description was not worth the paper it was printed on. The serial number is 125,489 and one of 10 I have recorded in this run plus two others of questionable jewel count.

Aren't some of these also jeweled on the underside of the vibrator, making them 21J?

Seems to me I recall discussing this once with Dick Ziebell and his mentioning these such jeweled 16KW's as the first American 21J watches.

NO

The only 21 I know of is a 20s which I once owned many years ago!

I think Dick owns a 21J 16s. I suspect the bottom jewel was added since he gets very cagey when asked about it. http://webhorology-mb.infopop.cc/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Since the jewel would be burnished in like the top one, it would not be difficult for an enterprising "repair" person to put back the "Missing Jewel."

Without good provenance, I would have a hard time believing a 21J example.
